Today be National Talk Like a Pirate Day. I’m not good at talking like a pirate, but whenever we go to Walt Disney World, I like to tell the poor pirate standing at the gates of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride a bad pirate joke. Sorry, bud.

“Across the Universe” Soundtrack from iTunes
September 14, 2007 // 1 Comment
Just picked up the “Across the Universe” soundtrack on iTunes… LOVE IT!
Across the Universe is a movie that opened today. I remember seeing a preview for it when Laura & I last went to the movies. Being such a Beatles fan, I had to get this soundtrack.
Within the lyrics of the world’s most famous songs lives a story that has never been told
Until now

I Once Was a Poker Champ
September 4, 2007 // Comments are Closed
I’m hosting a poker game this weekend, and need to freshen up on my skills. I once was, for a brief time, the top-ranked poker player in Western New York. How’d that happen? Ray, over at WNYPoker.com, put together a formula for ranking, and I won the first game (out of like 43 people). Because of the size of the game, no single player was able to take over first place by winning just one game. So for about 6 weeks, I was ranked #1, with 97.44 points, until someone scored enough points to knock me out. Slowly, I played less and less and dropped to 26th position.

To win, I read Doyle Brunson’s Super System: A Course in Power Poker
. It’s a big book… I just read the chapter entitled, “General Poker Strategy”, and then studied and memorized the charts in the back of the book. Because I have a game on Saturday, I cracked open the book again and will re-read the “General Poker Strategy” chapter.
Along with Doyle Brunson’s strategy, I have a theory that helps me win at poker. I only play poker, when I want to WIN.
See, I don’t play when I want to play. If I want to play cards, I tend to stay in hands that I shouldn’t be in. And I don’t play when I don’t want to play. If I’m playing, but don’t want to play, then I don’t care what happens and I play stupid.
The other self-imposed rule is that I don’t play when I’m hosting, or managing a game. Too many interruptions… where’s the beer, what’s the house rule in this case, I need to color-up, we have a player out & need to even the tables, etc. However, this game is for a good cause, so I’ll be playing.
If you’re looking for some WNY Poker games, check out WNYPoker.com. They cover Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara Falls, and the Southern Tier. Tell Ray that Eric sent you, and get a free gift!*
Thanks to Soceus, the snack sponsor for this week’s game!
*I’m not sure if Ray has any gifts… I just said this. If he doesn’t, buy yourself something nice from his store.

The Dark Side of Oz & Horoscopes
August 13, 2007 // Comments are Closed
File this under impulse purchases… I bought a DVD of the Dark Side of OZ, forgot about it, and it arrived in the mail the other day. So, while I was cleaning the house, and the kids were playing, I popped it in and 1/2 watched it.
The verdict?
Eerie. Yeah, there are parts that line up, but I think it’s only because I’m looking for them. Much like horoscopes. If you read a horoscope, then look for how it applied to your day, you’ll find similarities.
Strangely, even Becca & Jason, while running through the room, froze and stared at the TV for the longest time. It’s just mesmerizing.

Exciting title, eh? Some things on my mind…
I saw a cool episode of Modern Marvels on TV last night, all about renewable energy. It was so good, I saved it on the Tivo, so I can burn a DVD then rip the DVD and put the episode on my iPod. Then, in the middle of the show, a little ad appeared that Modern Marvels is available on iTunes! I’m so excited… this particular show isn’t on yet, but others are. I wonder how long they take to get posted online?
Also yesterday, it was a big delivery day at my house. I received an order from Land’s End, which included a pair of Beach Trekkers. I love them… they’re just a bit big. I should’ve ordered a 1/2 size smaller, since you don’t wear socks with them. So I called them up, and was talking to a person before it even rang on the other side! And… get this: the person was speaking perfect English! On a Saturday morning, I called customer service and spoke to a real person within 2 seconds. Amazing. The exchange process was even easier… she took my new order, and when they arrive, I can choose which pair to keep, and either return the other using the prepaid postage label or take it to my local Sears store. Land’s End has just won a lot of my future clothes shopping.
I also received a couple books from Amazon.com, along with Snatch on DVD, and a Christmas decoration that, I must say, I’m a bit disappointed in. Oh well, good thing Christmas is still 4-1/2 months away!
