Going to Bug Me All Day

This is going to bug me all day… at my desk, I have a very good view of the neighborhood & especially the street corner. The public schools have a 1/2 day today, and I just saw a mother pick up her daughter, they got in the car, and the daughter clearly didn’t have her seatbelt on as they drove away (she was hanging out the window). Should I have called the police?

In Kenmore, the police could get there in time. Actually, in Kenmore, they could get to me between the start & end of a sneeze. Is it my business? Do the police want to be bothered with this?

On the other hand, what if that car just got in an accident, and the kids flew threw the windshield? Should I feel responsible?

I saw this happen before, while I was out running. I was going to stand in front of the car as I called the police, but the fear of the angry mother running me over with her car kept me jogging along. I still think about that day.

Since that day, which happened months ago, still bothers me, this is the last time I’m looking the other way. The Kenmore police are getting a call next time. Hopefully that’ll make a difference.

I have found myself in similar situations. People are idiots. You can’t possibly stop them all. It would be a full time job, no holidays and tons of OT.

The one time I did say something to a parent was in McDonald’s about 10 years ago. There was a little boy in there that was about 3 or 4. His Mother dragged him outside by one arm and took him to the car and started beating his rear end. I went nuts on her. I told her to get her hands off of him and that was child abuse and if she didn’t stop, I was calling the police.

I think one swat on the rear end is ok but she was beating him. She was clearly shaken up that I confronted her in front of everyone in the parking lot. She actually said, “ok” when I told her to stop.

Don’t beat yourself up for not calling the police. If it bothers you that much, from now on promise yourself that when in a situation like that you will call every time. That’s about all you can do to feel better. :)
