How to Live with CFLs
Friday March 2, 2007 // Share on Facebook
The Complete Guide to Living with CFLs has some good tips in there… many I’ve known, but some new ones for me, too.
Generally speaking, you shouldn’t use CFLs in ceiling fans. They move around too much, and you’ll be disappointed when your bulb wears out prematurely.
We haven’t replaced the fans properly yet… Becca has an LED light, we have a CFL but no enclosure, and Morgan still has an incandescent. We’ll be hitting up WalMart tonight to see if we can find bulbs that fit… I’m still going to opt for the CFL in the ceiling fans.
And then we have to get some for the outdoors… but if the bulb is fully enclosed, why do they have to be special? I’ll have to look into that more.

If it’s an enclosed CFL, it’s probably approved for outdoor use and will be marked as such. There are two considerations for outdoor bulbs: thermal protection, and weatherproofing.
Let us know how the ceiling fans CFLs hold out. The vibration is rough on the ballast, but maybe you’ll do just fine.

Went to WalMart Friday night, got some mini CFLs for the ceiling fans and, so far so good. I can see what Chris is saying with the vibrations, especially considering ours are on 24/7 (sucking air UP during the winter, to push the hot air down, and pushing air DOWN during the summer, to create a cool breeze).
I also picked up some floodlights, for the motion detector outside.
