LOST: Only Fools are Enslaved by Time and Space

In the last episode of LOST, during the brainwashing scene, if you play it backwards, you hear “Only Fools are Enslaved by Time and Space”. Huh?

I love Lost… so I did some digging. Didn’t take long with a Google Search to get some ideas.

See, a main argument for “where are these people” is that they’re in purgatory. The writers have denied that, but it’s a good start.

First, look at the Buddhist Perspective on Time and Space:

The wise know how to use time and space perfectly; they lead free and harmonious lives. Fools are enslaved by time and space; they are busy running around all day.

Now, I know what you’re thinking - and I’m thinking the same thing. Why did I get this answer from dharmaweb.org - isn’t this site built just for the show? dharmaweb.org… Dharma Initiative… coincidence? No… Dharma really is an underlying belief in Buddhism.

Further researching this concept and Buddhism, I found an answer to, “What or where is Nirvana?

It is a dimension transcending time and space and thus is difficult to talk about or even to think about. Words and thoughts being only suited to describe the time-space dimension. But because Nirvana is beyond time, there is no movement and so no aging or dying. Thus Nirvana is eternal. Because it is beyond space, there is no causation, no boundary, no concept of self and not-self and thus Nirvana is infinite. The Buddha also assures us that Nirvana is an experience of profound happiness. He says:

Nirvana is the highest happiness.

The best definition for Nirvana that I could come up with is:

In Buddhism, it is basically a blissful spiritual condition where the heart extinguishes passion, hatred and delusion. It is the highest spiritual plane one person can attain.

Where am I going with this? I really don’t know… just spewing out ideas. I’ll have to wait another 52 hours or so until the next episode…

Why is everyone so obsessed with this show? And, nirvana was a great rock band — if Kurt came back from the dead to perform on Lost, I’d then tune in.

I’ve got seasons 1&2 on DVD… and season 3 as a subscription in iTunes. It was hard to get started on a show in the middle of season 3, but with the DVDs and iTunes subscription, I was able to catch up. If you watch the show, you’ll see why everybody’s obsessed with it.

And I thought this was original… these guys are really on top of this show - I’m going to leave it up to them to do the detective work:
